For years now, millions of people worldwide have been flocking to their favorite shops to buy fitted hats. They were made really popular in the 2000’s by rap artists like Jay-Z, the Diplomats and more. Fitted hats have always had a place in people’s hearts because the Major League Baseball organization mandates its players wear fitted hats and because people love baseball, they naturally want to wear the jersey and hat to show their love for their team and the sport.
How to wear a fitted hat
If you wear Majestic authentic Yankees jersey and a New Era on field Yankees hat, you’re more than halfway to being a full Yankee. A jersey with a hat is ok to wear, add the pants and our heads will be scratching, unless that is, you’re on your way to a game that hopefully you’re playing in. For some a jersey is too much and will opt to just wear the fitted hat. And for some, they choose to go with an adjustable like a snapback or dad hat. Fitted hats have a deep crown and a flat visor whereas dad hats have curved visors. Even though they come flat, they can easily be curved as the visor bends and holds the shape you give it.
There are many manufacturers and brands that make fitteds but the most iconic is the 59fifty by New Era. Many will look inside your fitted hat and if it doesn’t have the New Era hat taping inside, then it’s not considered ‘official.’ Fitted hats were very popular up until about 2010 when the masses turned their attention to snapbacks. Fitted hats never left it’s just that people went crazy over snapbacks. Shops continued to sell through their fitted hats during that time and are continuing to do so. It’s just not what it was. Times changed.
Types of fitted hats
Fitted hats have millions of fans and lucky for New Era, they are the premier choice when it comes to manufacturers. If clothing brands want to sell fitted hats, their best route is to have New Era produce their fitted hats for them. And that’s exactly what the brands end up doing which is a smart move. Mitchell and Ness make a really nice fitted which is the same shape as their famous snapback without the rear bartack. Still no matter how amazing, New Era fitted hats get sought after more. After all, they make MLB’s hats and like we mentioned before, MLB has millions of fans and these fans support the teams through merchandise.
New Era has three fitted hat programs
- Their core stock (on field fitteds and the black on black, white on white, etc..)
- Their fashion program
- Custom program
They each seem to fit differently than the other. It may be due to unique sourcing variance, meaning that each factory gives or takes on the sizing causing the irregularities in sizing. This is the major con of shopping for a fitted hat. It’s rare that two fitted hats fit exactly the same. To ask you to measure your head is pointless because there is no perfect system. Had every single New Era fitted hat been made by one and only one factory under the same guidelines, then maybe we can work out some type of sizing system but that’s not the case.
How to make fitted hat bigger or smaller
There are ways to adjust the hat to make it smaller or bigger but there’s only so much you can do. For example, you can wet the side tape and let it dry and your hat will shrink a size or two and if your hat is too tight, you can place it over your knee and break a couple of seams to give you some room. Because fitted hats are sized, they instantly have a personalization to them because chances are your friend may wear a different size so it’s not as easy as sharing your fitted hat with them. And you’re not about to bust seams so your friend can wear your hat for a while because there’s no return from that. Also, keep in mind you can only bust seams once.
