Mitchell and Ness
When it comes to the word quality, it’s synonymous with Mitchell and Ness. Started in 1904 and home to Philadelphia, this brand produces top notch merchandise from their hats to their jerseys, everything is second to none. They have license agreements with MLB, NHL, NBA, and Collegiate. The company was founded by Frank P Mitchell and Charles M Ness. When they first opened their doors they were making hand-crafted tennis racquets. They have since branched out to sell jerseys, jackets, hats, and wool-felt historic pennants.
Mitchell and Ness has been part of streetwear for decades now. They were at the heart of the jersey movement. Who remembers when the whole squad was rocking a jersey and a fitted hat to match? And when jersey numbers subsided, another item, the snapback, kept them steam-rolling ahead. Mitchell and Ness has proven itself time and time again. Their manufacturing is pretty spot on – super clean product. And as someone who pays attention to detail, Mitchell and Ness has the least number of damaged-from-the-factory goods on the market, they’re just that type of company. They have lots of pride in their company and it shows with the workmanship and the materials they choose to work with.
Mitchell and Ness culture
When you think of Mitchell and Ness you think of jerseys and hats which is what they’re widely known for. They’ve been able to consistently put out top quality merchandise that the mainstream masses want. They have stuck to the team’s official colors for the most part. However, they do offer their headwear accounts an option to customize or colorblock the hats into their own colorways which must be approved by the league as well. Being that we’re into headwear heavy, we can speak on them with confidence. That said, for the price-point their product is in a league of its own.
A lot of detail goes into making their hats down to the cardboard insert and hang tag. What’s amazing is that they are owned by Adidas along with Reebok and neither of them make hats quite like Mitchell and Ness. Mitchell and Ness has had a great run and it’s the quality and look that always made them a favorite by the streets. You’re talking about a company that has done tons of research in order to replicate the throwback jerseys. They’ve done a really thorough job getting the details right.
Materials used by Mitchell and Ness
The materials that Mitchell and Ness uses on their hats is spot on. It’s a great wool and acrylic blend that has just the right feel texture and structure to hold up well. Even though it has acrylic in it, it’s hardly noticeable. Since the price of wool shot up a few years back, they’ve been forced to use a blend rather than a 100% wool to keep cost down. This has affected other headwear brands as well. Other brands supposedly use the same mix which is an 80/20 wool/acrylic but you feel the acrylic more than you feel the wool.
Their headwear is also based on historic designs made by now non-existant headwear companies like the “Script” snapback or the “Shark” snapback. Mitchell and Ness pretty much replicated those designs of the past times and made them on their own blend of wool and acrylic on a Starter and other brands profile type of snapbacks to replicate the old school look. Which, after all, is Mitchell and Ness’ business model, to be a throwback company. It’s not easy being that type of brand. You have to ride out all the fads and stick to your roots and not jump on the bandwagons.
The Future of Mitchell and Ness
What does the future hold for Mitchell and Ness? We hope they continue producing great pieces and continue to be part of streetwear fashion. They’ve been around longer than a hundred years, it’s obvious they’re in it for the long haul. They continue to dominate the snapback category and they’ve released lower price-point jerseys that have been doing great for them. People love their sports and Mitchell and Ness has its own niche that fans are supporting. And as long as the fans keep supporting, there’s a need for Mitchell and Ness to exist. The world’s appetite for baseball, football, and hockey aren’t decreasing any time soon.
