If you’re reading this, chances are you’re looking into buying dad caps. If you are, great – if not, guess you landed on the wrong page? Moving right along, if you haven’t noticed yet, the youth have adopted the dad hat. Yes, it’s ironic but it’s time this silhouette got love from the fashion world. The soft cotton crown and curved brim are the signature characteristics of the dad cap. They come adjustable so there’s no sizing to deal with as we all know how that goes with 59fiftys. They’re currently made by all the licensed headwear brands as well as streetwear brands.
What type of dad hat or dad cap should you look for? The most popular ones are from 47 and American Needle mainly for the clean cotton looks. Steer clear from acrylic – those are very stiff and crease easily – plus they have a really cheap look to them. Luckily, the key brands are doing things the right way – cotton with a curved brim. This is in sharp contrast to the fitted trend where the visor had to be flat and the crown, wool. Because of the materials used and market supply, dad caps are generally cheaper than snapbacks and fitted hats.
The mainstream has been wearing dad caps for years now – the trend has caught on worldwide as more and more people emulate American streetwear fashion. It also helps that many music artists, sports athletes, celebrities and key influential people have adopted the dad cap. Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Kanye, just to name a few, have been seen wearing the dad cap. Kanye isn’t really a hat person. If you noticed, he wasn’t wearing fitteds or snapbacks much, if at all. This means that the dad cap market could be much bigger than the snapback market at the moment, especially when you factor in that older males do typically wear this silhouette when they wear hats.
We actually stocked them back in 2010/11 and they got nowhere near the demand they do now. We didn’t stock them because they were trending, instead we thought they were solid hats at the time even though no one else was really checking for them. If you look at it from a design perspective, the dad cap goes nicely with joggers and skinny jeans including ripped denim. Throw on some Adidas NMD’s or Ultra Boost and you have a complete look.
For some, they simply won’t go on board with dad caps but for the majority it’s easier to adapt because they have the same look as a Ralph Lauren Polo dad cap. It also wins points because it has a more mature look to it. We’re in an era where people have toned down their fashion whereas a decade ago it was, the louder the better. Remember 10 Deep all over hoodies and NBA patched denim pants? Nowadays people want a more toned down but classic look while still sagging pants. We don’t know how we were able to put the words ‘classic’ and ‘sagging’ in the same sentence but that’s quite an achievement.
No one knows where fashion is headed. You never know what the next season is going to bring. Will mainstream re-adopt the fitted next? You can be the judge of that. It’s highly possible, we’ll just have to wait and see. For some, they can’t wait for the dad caps phase to be done with because they’d rather see their favorite type of hat become more readily available because that provides them with more choices as now they’re very limited.
Why is there more supply of dad caps vs fitteds? It’s simple – New Era Cap has the fitted market all to itself because they have a unique fitted that no other company has been able to replicate. However when it comes to dad caps, you have brands like Mitchell and Ness, 47, American Needle, Nike, and Adidas, just to name a few, producing dad caps and flooding the market and competing against one another for market share. Although, there is a crowd favorite when it comes to dad hats, it isn’t as strong as with New Era Cap and fitteds. That company is 47. Even before the popularity of dad caps took off, 47 was making a preferred dad cap because they make theirs with 100% cotton and a unique curved brim ending up with a clean classic look.
Custom dad caps aren’t really prevalent because companies like 47 require a very high minimum that the mom and pop shops can’t really handle because it’s too many units and not enough demand in a fast enough time period. This limits retailers and customers to what the brands are designing and offering. You can’t go wrong with the team colors. And the black and white hats are a no-brainer. Certain teams like the Yankees and Dodgers are being offered in multiple colorways, so that’s good news for the respective fanbases.
